Symptoms

4 Symptoms – 1 Solution

Symptoms

Tingling Sensation

The Varicella Zoster Virus causes a tingling sensation by irritating or damaging nerve fibers in the affected area. As the virus multiplies and reactivates along the nerve pathways of the dermatome, tingling, itching, burning, or shooting pain can occur. These symptoms usually occur on one side of your body or face. These sensations can precede the appearance of the actual shingles rash by as little as days or to a week. As the infection continues, symptoms may intensify and proliferate.

Rash/Lesions

Shingles rashes or lesions are the hallmark of the infection and is often characterized by shooting pain. Typically, the affected area will appear inflamed with associated blistering or scabbing. The shingles rash typically persists for about two to four weeks. Once the scabbing process has begun, generally you are in the healing process. However, the pain may remain for an extended amount of time, which is known as Postherpetic Neuralgia.

Redness & Swelling

Even after the shingles rash has healed, some individuals continue to experience nerve pain in the associated area. Postherpetic Neuralgia can be debilitating and may continue to persist for months to years after the shingles rash outbreak. If shingles is left untreated, the risks of developing Postherpetic Neuralgia increases tremendously.

Fever and General Malaise

Some individuals with a shingles outbreak may also experience fever, headache, fatigue, and general malaise. Through viral replication, Varicella Zoster Virus attacks the nerves triggering an immune response that will ultimately weaken the immune system.

Sleep Disturbances

Due to persistent pain and discomfort, shingles may also interfere with your sleep schedule. Lack of adequate sleep will cause increased feelings of fatigue and general malaise throughout the course of the outbreak.course of the illness.

Headache

A lot of induvial who have shingles outbreaks experience headaches. This is due to the combinations of symptoms from the actual shingles virus.

Frequently Asked Questions

We have all heard the term shingles, So what exactly are shingles, and how does an individual become infected with shingles?

Do Not Let Shingles Run Rampant
WHAT IS SHINGLES?

Shingles or Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) reemerges generally after a chickenpox outbreak. Chickenpox is the initial viral infection that typically occurs during childhood or adolescence. After the chickenpox outbreak has resolved, the virus will remain dormant in human nerve cells (dorsal root ganglia or cranial nerves) for years or even decades. Once your immune system begins to develop deficits, the virus may reactivate, which then causes the virus to travel along nerve bodies, reaching nerve endings in the skin and reemerging as shingles. During an outbreak of shingles, the virus is transmissible during the active phase of lesions.

It is estimated that about 1 in 3 people will develop shingles at some point in their lifetime. Whilst shingles is more dangerous amongst immunocompromised adults, children are susceptible to outbreaks as well. According to studies done by the US National Institutes of Health, the number of new cases per year ranges from 1.2 to 3.4 per 1000 persons-years. In healthy people ranged from 3.9 to 11.8 per 1000 person-years of 65 and older. (1.2 to 3.4 what? Im a little confused there. Like do u mean people per 1000?)

Signs and Symptoms

In most cases, the initial phase is characterized by a skin rash during the first 1-3 weeks. Some associated symptoms include headaches, pain, tingling, flu-like symptoms, nerve pain, and fever. While some of these symptoms are more common than others, shingles is also characterized by a sensation of burning pain, itchiness, oversensitivity, or paresthesia. The pain from the rash can be mild to severe depending on the location and where the rash resides on the dermatome. Specific locations of your body rely on specific nerve connections to the spine, which can be related to the severity of symptoms. Lastly, age can also be a determining factor in the severity of symptoms, such as older adults or children.

Risk Factors

After the primary infection of chickenpox, your body will develop a temporary form of immunity against the Varicella-Zoster Virus until around the age of 50, where 1 to 3 person’s immune system will weaken and potentially cause a shingles outbreak. Older adults pose the highest risk towards the reemergence of shingles due to the natural degradation of the human immune system, which also includes immunocompromised individuals along with increased amounts of stress. Additionally, increased, and prolonged stress can pose another risk factor for the reactivation of the Varicella Zoster Virus. Finally, if a shingles outbreak is left untreated, Postherpetic Neuralgia.

Exposure and Dormancy

The primary infection, also known as chickenpox, is the initial encounter with the Varicella-Zoster Virus.

The virus is highly contagious and can be transmitted through respiratory droplets or contact with active lesions. Once infected, the individual will develop symptoms of fever, rash, and irritated blisters. Following the chickenpox outbreak, instead of being eradicated, the virus will enter a latent (inactive) phase within the nerve cells near the spinal cord, essentially a dormancy period in the dorsal root ganglia. In some individuals, the virus can reactivate later in life presenting as shingles. The reason for reactivation of the Varicella Zoster Virus is not yet fully understood, but known contributing factors are age-related, decline in immune function, and stress. Once the virus has been reactivated, it travels along the dermatome (nerve pathway), where it will destroy nerve cells and multiply until it reaches the skin. Characteristic symptoms of shingles include tingling, itchiness, burning pain, and the development of a rash in a specific area of the body. Distribution of symptoms and timeframe is based on where your shingles outbreak is located. However, if a shingles outbreak occurs without any treatment, permanent nerve damage may occur as well as future shingle rash outbreaks
